Austin-Healey Tops, Side Screens and Records: A California Selling Guide

When an Austin-Healey changes hands, the loose equipment can be almost as important to explain as the car itself. Roof pieces, side screens, tonneau covers and original components may have spent years on different shelves. Bringing them together helps a buyer understand whether the sale includes a usable car, a restoration project or something between the two.

Know which Healey you have

The National Motor Museum dates the Austin-Healey partnership to 1952, when Donald Healey reached an agreement with the British Motor Corporation for a new sports car using an Austin engine. The museum preserves a 100M, showing how model-specific details belong within the wider marque's history.

Give the year and exact designation supported by your paperwork. If a car is described as a special version, explain the evidence. Appearance changes or added equipment should not be used alone to establish factory identity.

Classic Austin-Healey Vehicles We Buy

We consider the 100, 100-6 and 3000 ranges as well as Sprites, including early and later body styles. Restored cars, long-owned drivers, modified examples and incomplete projects can be discussed. A small Sprite and a larger Healey require their own descriptions rather than a generic British-roadster listing.

If the vehicle has a later engine, transmission or body alteration, identify it. Keep original parts listed separately and say whether they are included in the agreed purchase.

Count the weather equipment

Photograph any top frame, fabric roof, side screens, tonneau and hardtop that accompanies the car. Identify damaged fabric, cloudy windows and missing attachment hardware. Do not force a stiff mechanism just to produce a top-up photograph; describe its condition and leave further assessment for inspection.

A roof stored separately may not have been fitted for years. State that uncertainty rather than claiming a perfect fit. If accessories belong to another Healey, do not include them in a completeness claim until their compatibility is established.

This inventory should also cover tools, spare wheels and removed trim. Write down what remains with you so an item visible in the garage is not mistaken for part of the vehicle.

Show the restoration beneath the finish

Gather bodywork photographs, repair invoices and mechanical records in date order. Distinguish paint and upholstery work from chassis or drivetrain repairs. Current images should show visible corrosion and unfinished work as clearly as the attractive exterior.
